Trendsetting Publication ‘Wallpaper’ Suggests Athens As Top Destination for 2023

Athens may not be for everyone, but those in the know insist the Greek capital is a must-visit in the new year.

Following a year of bumper tourism and international investment, Athens is top of the list for many international travelers, and renowned style guide Wallpaper recommends it as a must-stop in 2023.

“Athens is enjoying its very own metamorphosis with a plethora of recently restored buildings, large-scale projects, and fresh new openings,” Wallpaper claims in its recently published article.

Journalist Ellie Stathaki, who penned the article, says the city is now offering “fresh takes on classic Athenian moments, mixed with entirely new offerings,” which represent an “ever-evolving contemporary Greek identity that is much less about looking back, and more about a positive future.” 

She writes about a reimagining of some of the city’s finest modernist architecture; a boom in the hospitality industry; a move towards sustainability; and a wave of new cultural destinations.

“Creativity is running high, and Athens is on an upward trajectory, following a ten-year period of economic woes, political changes, and, of course, the troubles brought by the worldwide pandemic, all of which hit the city hard. Yet here we are, and the Greek capital seems to be heading towards sunnier times.”

Tourism numbers to Athens continue to break records, even in December, with the streets of the Greek capital busier than ever with tourists.
