After a successful first week run in New York City, the Village East Cinema has decided to add a second week of screenings of the smash-hit Greek film Worlds Apart.
Set in modern-day Greece Worlds Apart is comprised of three separate narratives each following a love story between a foreigner and a Greek. The Greek title of the film is “Enas Allos Kosmos”.
“Worlds Apart” was the highest grossing film at the Greek box office for the 2015-2016 season with its debut setting a record for highest grossing film since 2009.
Each story represents a different generation falling in love during a time of socioeconomic turmoil, only to connect as a single story in the end. The film follows the characters difficult path to love and the complications inherent in their world. Despite its harsh realities, Greece remains a place where truth, beauty and humanity exist. A place where love can thrive even in the darkest hour.
The film was written and directed by Christoforos Papakaliatis, who also stars in it, alongside Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, Andrea Osvart, Maria Kavoyianni, Minas Hatzisavvas, Tawfeek Barhom, and Niki Vakali.

The film will screen daily at the Village East Cinemas at 11:00am, 1:55pm, 4:50pm, 7:45pm and 10:40pm.

“We knew this film would be loved by everyone who saw it, but the support of the Greek community in New York has made all the difference with regard to the spectacular theatrical success it’s had so far,” according to Rich Castro, head of the film’s distributor, Cinema Libre.
Castro also commented on the overall quality of films emerging from Greece.
“We’ve proven not only that the film can compete, but that there are some truly magnificent movies coming out of Greece that deserve attention in the U.S. Now, we just need to keep the momentum going and I’m confident that we will.”
Chris Papavasiliou, one of the film’s producers and the Greek American connection to the project echoed Castro’s sentiments about the community’s support.
“The community support has been extraordinary and we’re as proud as we are grateful,” said Papavasiliou.
“The audience response to our film has been humbling and gratifying. It’s why we make movies. Thank you to all who’ve come out to support us— you made our extended stay at the Village East in NYC possible.”
Castro also commented on the importance of the New York City box office numbers, which send strong messages to other cinemas around the country which decide which films they run on their screens.
“When the film does well in New York City, other cinemas throughout the country follow and we see screenings in other cities,” Castro said.
