5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Greek Town of Florina

The northern Greek town of Florina was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on Sunday, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini reports that there were no injuries while some buildings suffered minor damage.

Authorities said schools in Florina, located in the mountainous region of Northwest Macedonia, would remain closed on Monday for precautionary and safety reasons.

The Greek Geodynamic Institute said the quake struck 1.2 miles from the town at a depth of 8.7 miles at 11:43pm local time.

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported earlier that the tremor had a magnitude of 5.8.

Dr. Dee Dinis, an earthquake geologist at the Seismology Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia, shared information about the quake in a thread on Twitter.
