Greek summer is nearing its end, but travelers to the famed island of Mykonos are still arriving in peak season numbers.
Officials are claiming that hotel occupancy rates have reached a staggering 90 percent for September.
These numbers puts the island on par with July and August, and means arrivals are expected to exceed 2019 levels, according to Andreas Ferentinos, head of the New Democracy party’s tourism department and former president of Mykonos hoteliers.
Ferentinos said that arrivals at Mykonos Airport totaled 677,000 so far, compared to 750,000 in 2019. Approximately 1,000 flights are yet to take place until the official end of the season on October 31.
The news comes as Mykonos is preparing to host its first running festival, scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 2.
Organized by the local municipality and the MEAS Triton sports federation, the first Mykonos Running Festival aims to become a multi-sided experience with a diverse array of related events.
“This new event will be a special experience that will give runners the opportunity to engage in quality tourism and also take part in a rich program of social, recreational and cultural events,” the organizers said.
The festival’s program is spread out in three races: The Half Marathon Mykonos Gold, 10km Mykonos Run and 2.5km Mykonos Family Fun. Parallel events include a kids athletics program, concert, beach party, festival of traditional products and business forum.
