The first phase of The Ellinikon Sports Park will open to the public on July 20, marking the first major public facility completed as part of the redevelopment of the former Athens International Airport.
The sports and recreation complex covers 287,000 square meters, including approximately 115,000 square meters of landscaped green space. It will form part of the larger Ellinikon Park currently under development along Athens’ southern coastline.
Facilities available during the opening phase include an outdoor athletics track and field area with seating for 1,070 spectators, four full-size football pitches, two basketball courts and two tennis courts. Two of the football fields have artificial turf, while the other two use hybrid turf.
The park will also include open green areas, pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, children’s recreation areas, event spaces and a 124-room accommodation building for athletes.
Four food and beverage outlets and approximately 1,350 parking spaces will be available. A mobile application will allow visitors to reserve sports facilities and parking spaces.
The venue was used ahead of its official opening for the Super Special Stage of the 2026 EKO Acropolis Rally, which brought 57 crews from 24 countries and more than 10,000 spectators to the site.
From July 20 through September, the sports park will operate daily from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Beginning in September, it is scheduled to operate from 8:00 a.m. until midnight, 362 days per year.
Admission will be free, with public access through the Alimos entrance on Aeroporias Street.
The Ellinikon redevelopment is being led by LAMDA Development and includes plans for residential neighborhoods, hotels, commercial and entertainment areas, cultural and educational facilities, healthcare services, sports infrastructure and a large coastal park.
