Three people have lost their lives after a deadly explosion at an ammunition factory in northern Greece on Monday morning.
The three missing were found dead a few hours after the very strong explosion that occurred at 8:15am local time in the area of Itea, Grevena.
Two of the three employees were from the village of Dimitra and the city of Grevena, while the third was from an unspecified village in Kozani.
The guard of the factory who had just changed his shift and left for his home was injured and was transported in a state of shock to the hospital of Grevena.
“The whole production unit has been destroyed,” Brigadier General A. Kalaidopoulos told local reporters. “There is no fire, it is a place of carnage.”
According to the officer, the explosion was so big that “we have boulders that have moved 200-300 meters.”
The mayor of Grevena, George Dastamanis, said that the explosion was heard in the city while its sound reached the municipalities of Deskati, Grevena and Aiani, Kozani.
Some facilities of the factory — which produced explosives for security reasons — are underground. According to the fire officer, the factory has been transformed into “an amorphous mass of rubble and iron.”
