In a video post on his Facebook page, Conservative New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that he has resubmitted his proposal for Greeks living abroad to have the right to vote in their country of residence.
Mitsotakis made the proposal before Parliament over a year ago but the ruling Syriza government has yet to bring it up for debate.
“Today more than ever we are obliged to give this right, not just to ethnic Greeks who left the country decades ago but also to young people who, in their hundreds of thousands, left the country during the years of the crisis,” Mitsotakis said in a video statement.
He also called on Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who has recently returned from a trip to the United States, to use his interactions with diaspora Greeks there as an example of why voting rights for Greeks abroad is important.
“This self-evident right should finally be consolidated in legislation,” he said. “There is no excuse for not bringing the legislative proposal to discussion in Parliament.”
