As government institutions in Greece continue to struggle with the aftermath of one of the country’s all-time deadliest wildfire catastrophes, officials faced yet another emergency situation on Thursday in Athens.
Three days after forest fires outside of the capital killed at least 84 people, flash floods swept through the northern suburb of Maroussi, flooding dozens of homes and leaving a parking lot full of cars floating in muddy water.
Authorities told drivers to avoid the area and shut down a side road off the main highway leading north out of the city.
The local fire department received more than 200 calls for help, including pumping water from businesses and homes.
Floods also affected the nearby neighborhoods of Kifissia and Melissia, but no injuries were reported.
