Officials have uncovered a large collection of ancient artifacts while constructing a new metro network underneath the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.

The items that were uncovered range from gold wreaths and rings to statues of the goddess Aphrodite.

To date, archaeologists have found more than 300,000 artifacts including coins, jewelry and marble statues, among others.

The large number of artifacts underneath Thessaloniki has long delayed the city’s newest metro construction, which was supposed to have been completed in 2012 after starting in 2006.

Archaeologists’ latest discoveries came in the area which used to be Thessaloniki’s ancient commercial center.

Several statues of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, were also discovered.

The Hagia Sophia metro station will feature a permanent exhibition of Thessaloniki’s archaeological discoveries. The rest of the findings will be displayed in various museums throughout the city.
