Hellenic American Union Sponsors Traditional Greek Costume Exhibition at Athens Airport

The Hellenic American Union has sponsored an exhibition at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” with drawings depicting a variety of traditional costumes from different regions of Greece.

The exhibition, titled “Hellenic Traditional Costumes,” features drawings by Gisis Papageorgiou with works from the Hellenic American Union’s collection.

Papageorgiou’s illustrations feature a broad range of traditional costumes from different areas on the Greek mainland and islands. The exhibition gives travelers a glimpse of Greece’s sartorial traditions over the generations.

The costumes depicted are made with diverse materials — silk, wool, linen and cotton — and colorful ornamentation, intricate gold stitching and embroidery.

Each costume bears the imprint of its region and maker but also the legacy of ancient Greece, elements of Byzantine culture and influences from central Europe.

“Hellenic Traditional Costiumes” is curated by art historian Lousia Karapidaki in collaboration with the Hellenic American Union and will run until July 17, 2022. The exhibition is free to the public and located in the “Art & Environment” exhibition area in the departures level of the Athens airport.
