A stunning time-lapse video by a renowned Greek filmmaker and photographer continues to mesmerize thousands with its unique imagery of Athens at night.
In his 2018 non-narrative short film titled “City of Athens—a Portrait of a Changing Metropolis,” Alexandros Maragos portrays the Greek capital after dark with impeccable technique, using a combination of hyperlapse, time-lapse and drive-lapse shots that create rarely-before-seen visuals of the city.
Maragos’ shots include famed Athenian landmarks such as the Acropolis, but he also shows modern urban structures and high-rise glass buildings.
In order to capture more breathtaking images, the filmmaker went above and beyond… Literally.
He climbed to some of the highest points in the greater Athens area — rooftops, hills and mountains — and took overarching cityscape shots, including some during a thunderstorm.
In the end, Maragos combined some 60,000 raw images taken over 90 days to create the scenes, and in the process became the first person allowed by the Greek Police to use their headquarter rooftops.
The film has received widespread critical acclaim since its release, having garnered more than 300,000 combined views on Vimeo, YouTube and Facebook and featuring excerpts on major Greek broadcast networks including SKAI TV, ANT1 TV, ALPHA TV, ERT as well as Euronews in Greece, UK, France, Germany and Portugal.
