Thousands of travelers are stranded throughout Europe, including almost 500 at the airport in Hania, in western Crete after the budget airline Primera abruptly declared bankruptcy.
The Icelandic-Latvian-Danish company issued a statement on their website:
“Dear Passengers, Airline Primera Air and IATA codes PF and 6F have been suspended as of today, October 2nd, 2018. On behalf of Primera Air team, we would like to thank you for your loyalty. On this sad day we are saying Goodbye to all of you.”
The low-coast carrier brought tens of thousands of travelers to Greece annually, including destinations like Zakynthos, Rhodes and Kos.
Following chaotic scenes at the airport, authorities in Hania rushed to help the stranded passengers with overnight hotel accommodations while other European airlines stepped in to help get the hundreds of stranded travelers home.
Passengers waited in long lines to get questions answered from staff members of the defunct airline who were also in the dark and who had also been impacted by the company’s demise.
