Kolonaki Square, one of Athens’ most upscale and historic public spaces, is set to undergo a major transformation after the completion of Metro Line 4. T
he winning redesign, created by XZA Architects, focuses on integrating the square with its urban surroundings while prioritizing accessibility and environmental sustainability.

The design features two interconnected levels: a lower plaza for public activities, including spaces for cafes, kiosks, and a flower market, and an elevated belvedere. The circular belvedere will provide panoramic views, connect different parts of the square, and shelter the entrance to the new Metro station.
Environmental elements are central to the plan, with the inclusion of drought-resistant Mediterranean plants, permeable materials, and a system for managing rainwater. The project also extends the square to the building line by pedestrianizing a southern road, creating more open space for public use.

This redesign aims to revitalize Kolonaki Square by combining functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. Once completed, the project will enhance the square’s role as a vibrant hub for Athenians and visitors alike.
