Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras sent a powerful anti-racist message to his nation after a basketball player became the target of a racist attack by a sports commentator.
Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis the “Greek Freak” Antetokounmpo helped his team, Panathinakos, beat cross-town rivals Olympiacos in a Euro League game last week.
Antetokounmpo was born in Greece to Nigerian migrant parents. He grew up in central Athens, attended Greek public schools.
After the game, a sports commentator called Antetokounmpo a monkey and went off on a racist tirade against the player.
Tsipras turned to social media to share his support for Antetokounmpo and against the racist attack.
Via his Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts, Tsipras posted a photo wearing a jersey with Antetokounmpo’s name, with the following text:
“Respect and pride for the people who were born and raised here and made Greece their own country. Zero tolerance to racism and hatred.”
