All the way from Thessaloniki, Greece, renowned dance instructor Kyriakos Moisidis is traveling to New York City on October 8-9 to offer a series of intensive Greek folk dance workshops.
Hosted by Meraki Folk Dance Astoria, the Greek American Folklore Society and Yia Mas, Moisidis will lead two afternoon workshops focused on regional dances from Pontos and Thrace.
The weekend will conclude with an evening “glendi” on Sunday, October 9, featuring live music by Pontian lyra expert Christos Tiktapanidis and traveling band Endasi.
Classes run on Saturday, October 8, from 3:00pm to 8:00pm and on Sunday, October 9, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. The glendi will begin at 7:30pm. All events will take place at the Stathakion Cultural Center located on 22-51 29th St in Astoria, Queens.
Meraki Folk Dance Astoria is a conglomerate of dance groups which present traditional Greek folk dances in local performances and dance competitions.
The Greek-American Folklore Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1983. The organization is dedicated to the study, preservation and instruction of the history and traditions of Greece. The society shares its work with the public through stage re-enactments of traditional Greek customs, songs and dances, and through lectures, exhibits and workshops.
