Numerous villages in southern Rhodes were evacuated when fires broke out on the island. The center of the fires is near the village of Apolakkia.

Several water-dropping airplanes and helicopters were brought in from other regions of Greece to assist in getting the flames out of control.

No loss of life has been reported although the fires have engulfed numerous buildings and animal stables.
