The critically-acclaimed Greek mythology-inspired musical ‘Hadestown’ is officially open at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City.
The Broadway production — which received the 2019 Tony Award for Best Musical — is a musical retelling of the mythical quest of Orpheus to overcome Hades and regain the favor of his one true love, Eurydice.
In ‘Hadestown,’ Orpheus and Eurydice fight to hell and back again (literally) for their love alongside the notorious Greek god Hades and his unwilling wife Persephone. The musical takes audiences down into a swirling story of love, death and betrayal.
The production has received widespread critical acclaim as well as prestigious awards and nominations since it premiered in April.
At the 2019 Tony Awards, ‘Hadestown’ received 14 nominations (the most for the evening) and won eight of them, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
The musical was created by award-winning American singer and songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and its front-running cast members include Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Patrick Page (Hades) and Eva Noblezada (Eurydice).
In an interview with Broadway.com, Carney and Noblezada spoke about how ‘Hadestown’ humanizes Greek myths.
“I think this retelling of the myth adds human personalities to these characters who we think are quite ethereal and out of reach,” Noblezada said. “All of the traits that we as humans suffer with are completely paralleled in these characters.
“My hope is that people can have compassion for all of the characters, even the ones that they wouldn’t otherwise normally feel compassionate towards,” Carney said.
In celebration of ‘Hadestown’ opening night on April 17, Broadway.com Resident Artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson sketched a portrait featuring the show’s stars offering an innovative homage to Greek mythology.
