Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker Alexander Payne Becomes Greek Citizen

Oscar award-winning film director, screenwriter, and producer Constantine Alexander Payne was sworn in as a Greek citizen at the Consulate General of Greece in Boston on Monday.

The consulate posted a photo of Payne via Twiter writing that “this was possible thanks to the work of Evgenia Beniatoglou, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles.”

“The Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles initiated and completed the application process for Mr. Payne’s Greek citizenship,” the Greek Embassy in Washington D.C. wrote on Facebook. “Welcome to our Greek family!”

Payne is a two-time Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay and a three-time nominee for Best Director. In 2017, Metacritic ranked Payne second on its list of the 25 best film directors of the 21st century.

The Omaha, Nebraska native is best known for his films Citizen Ruth (1996), Election (1999), About Schmidt (2002), Sideways (2004), The Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013) and Downsizing (2017).

Payne was born and raised in the United States by parents of Greek descent.

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias tweeted that Payne “proved once again that he does not forget his family roots.”
