United Airlines will begin direct flights from New York and Washington D.C. to Athens next month.
In a statement released Monday, the airline announced that its seasonal direct flights to and from Athens and the New York/Newark hub will begin in May and run until October 30.
United also said it would begin its seasonal direct flight from Washington D.C.’s Dulles airport on May 7.
Flights on both routes will be carried out by Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes.
Bob Schumacher, United Airlines’ director of sales for the UK, Ireland, Israel and off-line sales, said the company was enthusiastic about returning to Athens in 2022 by restarting direct flights from Greece to the United States.
Schumacher said flights to the U.S. are supplemented with connections to more than 95 destinations in the Americas.
Athens International Airport Communications & Marketing Director Ioanna Papadopoulou said the U.S. market showed great resilience even during the pandemic and remains one of the airport’s most popular and significant, thanks in great part to the Greek-American community.
