Greece Alcoholic Beverage Exports Show Long-Term Resilience Despite Headwinds

Greek spirit exports have surpassed the €100 million (~ $117 million) mark in 2025, despite the challenging global economic environment.

SEAOP President Charis Mavrakis attributed the 2025 dip in exports, the first since 2018, to international economic pressures, US tariffs, the ever-increasing cost of living and a consumer shift toward more moderate drinking.

According to Eurostat data processed by the Greek Federation of Spirits Producers (SEAOP), the total value of Greek alcoholic beverage exports reached €104.3 million (~ $122 million), with total export volumes standing at 36.7 million kilograms. Today, 65% to 70% of alcoholic beverages produced in Greece are exported.

While these 2025 figures represent a 9.2% decrease in overall value and a marginal 0.6% drop in volume compared to 2024, the industry’s long-term trajectory remains positive.

Over a five-year period (2021–2025), the sector has recorded a 20.6% increase in export value, a 2.1% increase in quantity and an 18.1% rise in the average selling price, demonstrating a successful shift toward higher value-added products.

Ouzo continues to be Greece’s flagship export, comprising 59% of total alcoholic beverage exports with a value of €61.4 million (~ $71.89 million) and 24.4 million kilograms. Compared to last year however, global sales of Greek ouzo fell by 4.8% in export value and by 4.51% in quantity.

Greek liqueur exports also fell by 10.3% to €7.2 million (~ $8.43 million), while the category containing vodka, gin, and whisky saw the sharpest decline of 42.8%, dropping to €10.1 million (~ $11.82 million).

Greek tsipouro and tsikoudia experienced a massive 19.3% drop in value down to €2.1 million (~ $2.46 million), despite a 4.2% increase in the actual quantity exported.

The “other spirits” category—primarily consisting of brandy—was the only group to see financial growth in 2025, rising by 6.7% to reach €23.4 million (~ $27.41 million).

The European Union remains the cornerstone of Greek alcoholic beverage exports, accounting for 76.9% of the total value and 77.5% of the volume.

Germany is the top importer of Greek alcoholic beverages, accounting for 35.15% of the total export value and 39.91% of the volume. Iraq comes in second with 13.33% of the value and 14.83% of the volume, while the United States ranks 9th, holding 2.40% of the value and 1.43% of the volume.
