Chicago based Hellenic American Leadership Council has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 for SOS Children’s Villages, a US-based organization that has had an active presence in Greece since 1975.
Through its active online presence and national network of advocates and supporters, HALC has been able to reach more than $36,000 in donations (as of the writing of this story). If the campaign reaches $50,000 in grass-roots support, the Jaharis Family Foundation will match the amount with an equal gift of $50,000.
SOS Children’s Villages currently runs seven social centers where a trained staff of social workers, psychologists and educators provide immediate and long-term support to 1,150 vulnerable families, including 2,260 children.

In the past five years, they have reached 4,500 families through critical services, which have included psychological support for parents and children, food and clothing, job-focused skills training for parents and numerous support for some of Greece’s most vulnerable families impacted by the financial crisis.
