For the seventh year in a row, Aegean Airlines won the title of Best Regional Airline in Europe at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, also known as the Passenger Choice Awards.
The Greek air service has received the award eight of the past 10 years and was also awarded for having the Best Cabin Crew in southern Europe.
According to a customer survey completed for the awards between August 2016 and May 2017, more than 19.2 million passengers worldwide rated the company for high-quality service and hospitality.
Apart from ranking first within Europe, Aegean placed fourth overall among Best Regional Airlines in the world.
The award announcement comes just one month after the company signed a 5 billion-euro ($5.8 billion) deal with Airbus to buy new A320 neo passenger planes — aircraft with reduced emission and noise levels designed to save 15 percent on fuel.
According to the Associated Press, Aegean chairman Eftychios Vassilakis said the company will buy 30-42 planes in an investment necessary to grow competitiveness and expand the range of destinations; likewise, Aegean will also invest 30 million euros ($35 million) in cooperation with Airbus to open a new training center at the Eletherios Venizelos Airport airport in Athens.
The airline was founded 19 years ago and currently serves 150 destinations in 44 countries.
