An Athens-born photographer who specializes in personal narratives and documentary work is coming to New York City to debut his latest photo series challenging assumptions about femininity, masculinity, age and sexuality.
The series, titled “Andro/Gyne” will open on Thursday, November 21 and was conceptualized by Alexandros Koromilas — also known as Alex Janero — and is the result of a collaboration with Christiane Lange and actor Foivos Papadopoulos.
In the series, Janero juxtaposes a woman whose breasts have been amputated due to cancer with a “classically beautiful” man in black-and-white nudes.
Koromilas’ photo series forms part of a broader group show called “Body Beautiful,” which opens at The Untitled Space gallery (45 Lispenard St) on Thursday 6:00-9:00 PM. The show aims to celebrate the “diversity” and “timeless beauty” of the human body while fighting against censorship — especially online. It features 50 artists marks the first-ever gallery showing of Janero’s latest series.
“’Andro/Gyne’ is about being fully alive in spite of loss, and through the body the photos to bring out the beauty of a human connection,” Janero said of his work. “Trying to share ‘Andro/Gyne’ on Facebook quickly brought us up against the bots, so the aims of ‘Body Beautiful’ are directly relevant to the project on several levels.”
Janero’s past work includes a short film about refugee children in Athens, video productions for performance artists and commercial photography. A portion of his new photo series was published in Flaunt Magazine’s digital edition in August 2019.
“Body Beautiful” will run until December 14 and a portion of event proceeds will benefit Art4Equality, a non-profit organization that supports gender equality-themed art exhibitions and special projects including films and public art.
A portion of the artist’s proceeds will benefit Metavivor, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of advanced breast cancer and equity in research and patient support.
