People throughout the world are mourning the loss of Stefanos Gialamas, who built the American Community School Of Athens into a world-class institution.
With deep roots in Chicago and a long professional career in the United States as an educator and administrator, Gialamas lived in Athens with his family, where he served as President of ACS.
Prior to his arrival at ACS Athens he served as the Provost of the American College of Thessaloniki.
The board of directors of the school issued a statement to the press expressing “deep sadness and great disbelief” of Gialamas’ passing in his sleep on October 18, 2019, prior to a keynote speech at the Alliance for International Education (AIE) Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Gialamas had been at ACS Athens since 2005. Under his leadership, ACS Athens became a world-class international school built on American educational practices and principles and serving the local Greek and international community in Athens.
A visionary of education and a lifelong learner, Stefanos Gialamas believed in serving humanity and was a mentor to many individuals that came across his path.
According to Suheil Sabbagh, Chairman of the ACS Board of Trustees, “He will always be remembered for his inspiring and exemplary leadership, for his love of children and of those in need, and for his innovative approach to education; but most importantly for his deep belief that education must result in the highest form of giving and demonstrating kindness to others.”
The ACS Athens Board of Trustees said in their statement that the vision of Stefanos Gialamas will continue intact.
