In an effort to turn Greece into an international student hub, Greek universities will begin offering more courses in English beginning this year.
Universities in Greece will team up with those in the United Kingdom to offer a more cost-effective alternative for international students to receive a British-level education through joint programs.
The aim is to expand the number of courses offered in English, and therefore attract more students from the Balkans and other Mediterranean countries, along with international students from South Asia and China.
Greece also aims to entice more Greek students to remain in their home country to study.
According to Kathimerini, more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs will be added, most in 2023-24 but some in the 2022-23 academic year.
The report claims the Greek universities will seek support from EU structural funds.
“In practical terms, the students — Greek and international — will receive a degree that is issued jointly by the Greek and British universities involved in the partnership,” Christos Michalakelis, assistant professor at Athens’ Harokopeio University and Study in Greece president, was quoted saying at a conference recently.
“his constitutes a significant competitive advantage for Greek universities, as they will be able to issue degrees with a ‘British stamp,’ but with much lower fees and for a much lower cost of living,” Michalakelis said.
