Nancy Pelosi Invites Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Address US Congress

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will address a Joint Meeting of Congress next month, following an invitation by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mitsotakis will visit the United States in May and is scheduled to meet US President Joe Biden in the White House on May 16.

Pelosi sent a letter to Mitsotakis inviting him to address a Joint Meeting of Congress on May 17.

In the letter, the Speaker wrote: “It is our great privilege to host you for this belated commemoration of the Greek bicentennial, which we had to unfortunately delay last year due to the pandemic.”

Pelosi said the “unshakable bond between the United States and Greece” is firmly rooted in the two nations’ shared history and values.

“When drafting our Constitution, our Founders drew on the Ancient Greek ideals of liberty and democracy. Decades later, the Hellenic Republic was born of the same yearning for independence and self-government that ignited the American Revolution. Today, more than two centuries later, our nations are key allies on the world stage: advancing our mutual security and economic interests, as well as promoting our shared democratic values in the world.”

In their meeting in the White House, Mitsotakis and Biden are expected to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, among other issues.

“The leaders will discuss ongoing efforts with allies and partners to support the people of Ukraine and impose economic costs on Russia for its unprovoked aggression,” the White House said in a statement.

“They will discuss our close cooperation on global challenges, including climate change and energy security. The leaders will take stock of our joint efforts to promote global security through NATO, as well as our shared goals for peace and prosperity in the region. They will also celebrate the history, democratic values, and trade and investment links that have united our peoples and countries for generations,” the White House said.
