One in Five Greeks Unable to Keep Their Households Sufficiently Warm

New data released by Eurostat reveals that a significant proportion of Greeks are struggling to maintain adequate heating in their homes.

According to figures for 2024, 19% of Greeks cannot sufficiently warm up their households—a figure that’s in stark contrast with the EU’s average of 9.2%

Greece shares this grim distinction with Bulgaria, while Lithuania and Spain follow closely, registering difficulty rates of 18% and 17.5% respectively.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the nations most successful at mitigating energy poverty include Finland, where only 2.7% of the population can’t heat their homes. Poland and Slovenia followed with rates of 3.3%, while Estonia and Luxembourg also posted comparatively low figures of 3.6%.

Meanwhile, the general trend across the EU bloc has shown signs of progress, with the average improving by 1.4 percentage points compared to 2023.
