Sometimes the best accolades come from the masses. This is the case with the millions of users of the TripAdvisor platform and those who participated in the “Travellers’ Choice Awards” for 2025 and named a Greek beach the best in the world.
Although there are rankings subdivided by region… Best in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and so on… The top dog of beached– the best in the world?
Elafonissi Beach on the island of Crete.
Beaches in Thailand, Aruba, Florida and Portugal followed Elafonissi, to complete the top 5, globally.
According to the award site, “With pink (yes, pink) sands and turquoise waters, Elafonissi Beach is just one of those places you have to see to believe. The shallow lagoons are perfect for curious kids, while the deeper waters invite all sorts of adventure for adults: swimming, snorkeling, you name it. Just make sure to stick around until sunset—you won’t regret it.”
Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia (photo below) placed #10.

According to TripAdvisor, their awards are based on “the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period.”
“Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards uniquely reflect the voices of millions of global travelers and help guide people to plan their best trip yet,” Kristen Dalton, president of the Tripadvisor core business, shared in a statement.
Elefonissi is a few hours’ drive from the town of Hania, in western Crete. The sand along the water of the beach is a pinkish color because of the tiny light red wheels left from dying microorganisms in the water.
The intensity of the pink color depends on the weather, the season and the tide. Furthermore, the beach used to be much pinker but visitors over the years have stolen handfuls of sand as souvenirs. As a result of the diminishing pink nature of the beach over the years, laws were enacted prohibiting the collection of sand.
