Paxos is the main island of this tiny group of islands just south of Kerkyra in the Ionian Sea with even more tiny Antipaxos nearby.
The islands are stunningly beautiful and green and have been left largely untouched, given their isolation from the mainland.
In mythology, the islands were created when Poseidon struck his trident on Corfu to give his wife Amphitrite her own peaceful get-away.
Similar to other islands throughout Greece, inhabitants on the islands mainly make their living through olive oil production, soap manufacturing, fishing and other such trades.
In the mid 1960s, tourism became a thriving industry on the islands, resulting in a construction boom which has since altered the coastline surrounding Gaios — the capital of the island community.
The island is serviced by hydrofoils and ferry boats from the mainland Greek port of Igoumenitsa (1.5 hours), hydrofoil boats from Corfu (1 hour) and from Bari and Brindisi (4 hours).
See below a compilation of photos that will make you want to book your next Greek island getaway on Paxos.
