Young Swimmer From Crete Breaks World Record

Greek youth swimmer and Cretan native Apostolos Papastamos, 18, has set a new World Junior Record and Championships Record at the 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.

With a final time of 4:11.93 in the 400 Individual Medley, Papastamos torched the previous record of 4:13.39 — set by American swimmer Carson Foster at the 2019 U.S. National Championships.

Foster was among Papastamos’ competitors at the World Junior Championships in Budapest, Hungary on August 24, but he placed sixth with a time of 4:17.39.

Papastamos’ record time also topped the previous Greek national record of 4:14.41, set in 2012 by Ioannis Drymonakos at the European Championships.

In an official Facebook announcement, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs congratulated Papastamos, a native from the city of Chania.
