Greece Appoints Architect Sotirios Kotoulas as New Honorary Consul for Winnipeg

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, architect and design studio founder Sotirios Kotoulas was sworn in as the Honorary Consul of Greece in Winnipeg, taking on a jurisdiction that spans the entire province of Manitoba, Canada. The ceremony, which took place at the Greek Embassy in Ottawa, was conducted by Her Excellency, Greek ambassador to Canada, Ekaterina Dimakis.

“The Embassy of Greece in Ottawa warmly welcomes the oath-taking ceremony of Mr. Sotirios Kotoulas as Honorary Consul of Greece in the City of Winnipeg, with jurisdiction throughout the Province of Manitoba, Canada, during a ceremony held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026,” the Greece in Canada post said. “We extend our sincere congratulations to Mr. Kotoulas and wish him good health and every success in his important duties serving our Greek diaspora in the region and supporting our broader efforts to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Greece and Canada.”

In his new role, Kotoulas is responsible for representing the interests of the Hellenic Republic and supporting diplomatic, cultural, educational, and economic relations between Greece, Manitoba, and Canada. The Honorary Consulate provides consular services to the local Greek diaspora and facilitates cooperation in sectors including trade, energy, shipping, and education.

“It is a profound honour to serve the Hellenic Republic as Honorary Consul for Manitoba. Greece and Canada share deep cultural values, democratic traditions, and longstanding bonds between their peoples,” Kotoulas stated. “I look forward to strengthening these relationships through diplomacy, culture, education, trade, energy, shipping, and meaningful collaboration between our two countries. I look forward to undertaking this role with the Greek diaspora community of Manitoba and to supporting its continued vitality and success, while providing consular services and strengthening ties between Greece and Canada.

“I would like to thank Her Excellency Ambassador Ekaterina Dimakis for her support and distinguished leadership, and I look forward to working closely with her and the diplomatic team in advancing the relationship between Greece, Manitoba, and Canada,” he added.

Mr. Kotoulas is the founder of Sotirios Corp, an architecture and design studio with projects throughout North America, and Europe. He received his professional degree in architecture from The Cooper Union in New York City and completed his Master of Architecture degree at McGill University in Montreal, in history and theory of architecture under Alberto Pérez-Gómez. His book, Space Out, published by Springer-Verlag and edited by Lebbeus Woods, explores the spatial and material dimensions of invisible and immeasurable electromagnetic phenomena. Recent projects include Sherbrook Flats, a structural masonry mixed-use apartment building in downtown Winnƒmipeg; a residence for artist Katherine Bernhardt in Old San Juan; and exhibition and bookstore designs for the DESTE Foundation in Athens, including the GenX exhibition opening in June 2026. His work has been exhibited at the Melas Martinos gallery in Athens, Greece.

Mr. Kotoulas has designed artist studios and cultural spaces throughout North America and, through Alpha Masonry, has led major heritage restoration projects in Canada and the United States, including the award-winning Sun Tower restoration in downtown Vancouver, the Judd Foundation Architecture Office Building in Marfa, Texas, and the ongoing restoration of the Manitoba Legislative Building.

Sotirios Kotoulas also collaborated with the late Elder and Knowledge Keeper Dr. Dave Courchene, Nii Gaani Aki Innini (Leading Earth Man) of the Anishinaabe Nation, on an architectural space for ceremony, ritual, and education at an ancient sacred site in Manitoba.

Sotirios Kotoulas exhibited a new body of work titled Star Stories in the exhibition Conceiving the Plan: Nuance and Intimacy in the Construction of Civic Space at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture, Italian Pavilion, curated by Yael Hameiri Sainsaux and Alessandro Melis; the exhibition continues to tour internationally, accompanied by a catalogue published worldwide by Skira.
More recently, Sotirios Kotoulas and artist Jamie Diamond collaborated on a conceptual Chase Manhattan Bank branch for Albuquerque, presented in 2024 in the Monte di Pietà exhibition at the Prada Foundation in Venice.

Sotirios Kotoulas has extensive experience in cultural diplomacy and governance, having served as Board President of Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and Basilica Hudson, and as a board member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He is currently Board Chair of Anthology Film Archives and serves on the board of the International Peace Garden. Mr. Kotoulas has taught at the University of Manitoba, University of Puerto Rico, Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, and currently teaches architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was the Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, in 2023.
