The international premiere of the cinematic opera “OEDIPUS: Sex With Mum Was Blinding,” is coming to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:30pm.
The show has been praised an an “immersive opera” which mixes traditional performance with cutting-edge technology and emerging neuroscience, while its narrative draws inspiration from the ancient Greek tragedy “Oedipus Rex.”
Conceived, written and directed by Fulbright Artist’s Award recipient Elli Papakonstantiniou, “OEDIPUS” includes original music composed by renowned musicians and composers Tilemachos Moussas and Julia Kent. During the performance, their live music accompanies an array of surreal cinematic environments created by media artist Stephanie Sherriff.
By using new technologies which turn the audience into the actual chorus of the opera, the piece rediscovers the community at the heart of a political performance, as it was in the ancient times. Mythology, pop cultural references and gender reexaminations all come into play, as an all-female acting ensemble of opera singers — led by a female Oedipus — and jazz vocalists join forces with musicians to dive deep into a haunting mind game.
The show runs from September 25 to September 29 and is produced by the award-winning, Athens-based theater company ODC Ensemble and New York City-based non-profit The Directors Company — led by producer Leah Michalos.
The cast includes Nassia Gofa, Elias Husiak, Anastasia Katsinavaki, Theodora Loukas, Lito Messini, Misha Piatigorsky and Manos Tsakiris, as well as musicians Julia Kent (cello) and Misha Piatigorsky (piano).
The production is supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, Neon Foundation, J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, ODC Ensemble, CCRMA, Stanford University, BIAS and the University of London’s School of Advanced Studies.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is located on 321 Ashland Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217,
