Greece Rushes to Support Earthquake Ravaged Albania

Dozens of municipalities throughout Greece have mobilized to support earthquake-stricken Albania with collections of food, clothing and other essentials.

Greece’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport sent a team of civil engineers to support efforts while an Athens-based team from Doctors Without Borders also departed for Albania to support in the relief efforts.

Greece has so far sent three mobile cooking units, courtesy of the Greek army, two Special Disaster Unit rescue teams with a sniffer dog and special equipment, doctors and medicine from the Medical Association of Athens, while hospitals in Thessaloniki said they will accept and treat Albania’s injured free of charge.

Municipalities throughout the nation are gathering essentials for Albanians who lost their homes in the deadly quakes.

The 6.4 Richter scale earthquake that shook Albania on Tuesday has so far claimed the lives of 49 people and injured at least 1,050.

Thousands of buildings were destroyed, leaving many people homeless and living in temporary tent cities.
