Health authorities recorded 21,657 new COVID-19 cases in Greece over the last 24 hours amid a worldwide surge attributed to the Omicron variant.
The new cases bring Greece’s total to 1,105,885 (with a 2% daily increase), of which 50.4% are men. Based on confirmed cases in the last week, 195 are considered to be related to travel from abroad.
Greece also recorded 60 new deaths of patients with COVID-19, bringing total deaths to 20,557. According to the authorities, 95.2% of the victims had an underlying disease and/or were aged 70 years and older.
The median age of cases is 38 years while the median age of death is 78 years.
Meanwhile, Greece’s health ministry is reportedly considering reducing the recommended time that people should isolate when they’ve tested positive for the virus.
Following the example of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Greece is thinking of reducing isolation time from 10 days to five, if the infected person is not showing symptoms.
Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris said that after five days authorities will likely recommend wearing a mask around others for at least five more days.
