Move over Horiatiki, there’s a new Greek salad boss in town. Well this, according to TasteAtlas, one of the world’s largest foodie websites with thousands of recipes and food-related content from throughout the world.
This year, the popular Cretan Dakos salad topped the list of the world’s top 100 salads.
There are different iterations of the traditional Dakos but one ingredient is standard: dry dark rusks, or paximadia, as they are known in Crete. Chopped tomatoes are added on top with a white cheese, usually Cretan mizithra cheese.
Crumbled feta is also used in alternate recipes, while some variations also include other vegetables like chopped cucumbers, capers, even finely chopped peppers.
The salad is always topped with olive oil and sometimes, oregano.
In additional to cataloguing thousands of recipes and global food-related content, TasteAtlas publishes numerous lists, including best cuisines, best appetizers and others that always gain a hurricane of comments from users throughout the world.
Thousands of people have already commented– positive and negative– about Dakos being named the number one salad in the world on the website’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages.

Award-winning Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Writer Elena Paravantes calls the Cretan Dakos “the ultimate representation of the Mediterranean diet” on her popular website and provides a simple recipe, and also a breakdown on why this is such a healthy salad.
