The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales (GOC NSW) welcomed members of the Hellenic Presidential Guard (Evzones) to the Greek Community Home for the Aged in Earlwood on April 30, delivering an emotional and patriotic experience for over 100 residents and their families.
A contingent of the Evzones delegation that is visiting Australia made the special visit to the facility. The presence of these iconic guardians of Greek national pride stirred heartfelt responses, with many elderly residents taking photos and exchanging stories as they reconnected with their homeland through this powerful cultural encounter.
The community’s President Mr Harry Danalis emphasized the deep significance of the visit for the aged care residents, all of whom are of Greek heritage.

“Many of our residents have never had the chance to witness the Evzones in Greece at the changing of the guard or national events,” Mr Danalis said.
“This visit brought a piece of Greece into their lives – a reminder of their roots, their identity, and their history. For many who may never travel back, this is a gift that means the world.”
Lieutenant Ioannis Kontogiannis addressed the gathering, offering a compelling presentation on the proud history, symbolism, and duties of the Presidential Guard. He traced their origins to December 12, 1868 and explained their ceremonial role at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Presidential Mansion, and their barracks in Athens.
“The Presidential Guard was created to honor those distinguished by bravery and military virtue,” Lt. Kontogiannis shared. “Its uniform, rich with symbolism, is a living emblem of our national identity and a direct link to Greece’s fight for independence.”
The moving afternoon served not only as a cultural highlight but also as a meaningful act of connection, identity, and dignity for residents of the Greek Community Home.
