Greece is reorganizing its defense industry to keep up with global changes, focusing its efforts in two main areas—traditional manufacturing and advanced technology.
The first area of focus is centered around Greece’s traditional industrial base. State-owned companies such as Hellenic Defence Systems and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry remain vital for ammunition supplies and aircraft maintenance, ensuring the Hellenic Armed forces’ operational readiness.
The Hellenic Vehicle Industry has also traditionally positioned itself as the key player for military and special vehicles. Meanwhile, Greece’s shipbuilding sector, comprised of the Skaramangas, Syros, Elefsina, and Salamis shipyards, is re-emerging as a hub for co-production and fleet upgrades rather than just repairs.
Major Greek industrial groups like METLEN Energy & Metals also are entering the fray. With two factories operational, a third ready in 2026 and two more in the investment pipeline, the company’s Volos-based M Technologies division aims to integrate Greek production into European and allied supply chains.
But the Greek defence industry’s dynamic growth doesn’t end there. Recognising that modern warfare is increasingly data-driven, Greek firms have expanded into electronics, sensors, and network-centric warfare.
Intracom Defense has established itself as a global leader in communications and defence electronics, while Scytalys specialises interoperability and battle management software (C4I).
Companies like Theon Sensors and Miltech turned into become major providers of night-vision and thermal imaging technology. Prisma Electronics designs, develops and manufactures a wide array of IT, smart-grid and wireless-based systems and components.
This Greek defence ecosystem also includes companies like Space Hellas, Elfon, Mevaco and Siamidis. Space Hellas provides critical ICT, cyber-defense, and integrated border security systems. Elfon specializes in aerospace engineering, manufacturing precision wiring harnesses for global defense giants like Lockheed Martin and the European Space Agency.
Mevaco is a heavy metal fabricator for both renewable energy infrastructure and ruggedized defense platforms. Siamidis is specialized in technical textiles that offer ballistic and fire-resistant protection for major clients like NATO.
