The Hellenic American Leadership Council has launched an emergency relief campaign for the victims of deadly wildfires in Greece that have claimed at least 74 lives and left hundreds injured and missing.

Thousands fled their homes and many jumped into the sea for survival, 700 of whom have been rescued by the Hellenic Coast Guard, according to officials.
Entire communities have been burned to ash, and Greek Interior Minister Panos Skourletis described the disaster as “biblical.”
The Chicago-based council has partnered with Chicago Sister Cities International – Athens Committee to launch the relief effort which aims to fund the Hellenic Red Cross and other emergency services as they try to save lives and rebuild devastated communities.
The GoFundMe campaign has already received nearly $5,000 of donations.
In the past, the organization has raised as much as $250,000 for various Greek-related causes — from funding Olympic athletes to crowdfunding for children affected by the economic crisis.

Since you’re here… I have a small favor to ask.
More and more people than ever before are reading The Pappas Post and despite increasing costs to maintain the site and provide you with the quality content that you deserve, I will never “force” you to pay for our website or add a paywall. I believe in the democracy of the internet and want to keep this site and its enriching content free for everyone. But at the same time I’m asking those who frequent the site to chip in and help keep it both high quality— and free. We’ve implemented a “free-will” annual subscription for those who want to support our efforts. I guess it’s fair to call it a philotimo subscription… because you don’t have to do it but it’s really the right thing to do if you love the site and the content we publish. So if you like The Pappas Post and want to help, please consider becoming a “philotimo subscriber”. Click here to subscribe. If you’d rather make a one time donation, we will gladly accept any amount, with appreciation. Click here to donate any amount.

Disgusted. About to make a donation and was totally put of by having to leave a tip!!!! Seriously, either you volunteer for this or this is a business. if you you are a volunteer, then all efforts are for free and there cannot be any expectation of remuneration. I am on vacation in Greece and I will make my contribution in another way.
Dear Stavro,
The choice to donate is completely yours and you may contribute in whichever way you believe to be appropriate, but please do keep in mind that the tip is not being imposed by the Hellenic American Leadership Council; rather, the tip is a feature included by GoFundMe and the money from those tips goes only to GoFundMe — not the organization/individual who is running the fundraiser. The reason for this is because, rather than charging a platform fee on personal campaigns in the U.S. and Canada, GoFundMe gives donors the option to add a voluntary tip.
