Thousands fled their homes and many jumped into the sea for survival, 700 of whom have been rescued by the Hellenic Coast Guard, according to officials.

Entire communities have been burned to ash, and Greek Interior Minister Panos Skourletis described the disaster as “biblical.”

The Chicago-based council has partnered with Chicago Sister Cities International – Athens Committee to launch the relief effort which aims to fund the Hellenic Red Cross and other emergency services as they try to save lives and rebuild devastated communities.

The GoFundMe campaign has already received nearly $5,000 of donations.

In the past, the organization has raised as much as $250,000 for various Greek-related causes — from funding Olympic athletes to crowdfunding for children affected by the economic crisis.
