6,590 positive cases of COVID-19 were recorded over 24 hours prior to Christmas Day, according to official statistics released by the country’s health authorities. Of these cases, only 11 cases were detected at border points.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,070,833– or approximately ten per cent of the country’s population, have been infected.
A total of 58 fatalities were also recorded on the day, bringing the death toll from COVID-19-related cases to 20,350.
The government also released specific statistics related to the day’s cases. 95.2 percent had an underlying condition or were aged above 70. The average age of the victims was 78.
The surge comes as the government has re-introduced certain measures to combat the spread.
Those traveling to Greece will need to be tested for COVID-19 on the second and fourth day after their arrival. All public Christmas festivities were also cancelled and mask mandates have been re-introduced for outdoor gatherings.
