Greece Announces Film Selection for 97th Academy Awards

In a scandal-laced and embarrassing selection process, Greece announced its official film entry into competition for the 97th Academy Awards.

The film “Murderess” will represent Greece in the global competition for Best Foreign Film.

Based on the celebrated novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis, “Murderess” takes place on a remote Greek island at the turn of the 20th century, where a young woman struggles to survive according to the confines of her patriarchal society.

The selection process in Greece was controversial, with mass resignations and firings of members of the committee that were selected (and fired) by the government and accusations of favoritism and underhanded moves.

The full story has been covered in the international film media and has been embarrassing for Greece’s film community and the government ministry that oversees film production in the country.

Variety, a Hollywood-based industry publication outlined the story extensively when making the Oscars announcement.
