Universal Pictures Releases Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” Trailer

More than 2,700 years after Homer gave the world one of its greatest stories, The Odyssey is heading back into the global imagination — this time through the lens of Christopher Nolan.

Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of the ancient Greek epic, offering the first major look at what may become one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026.

The film, scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2026, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca whose long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War became one of the foundational stories of Western literature.

Nolan, whose previous films include Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, Interstellar and The Dark Knight trilogy, appears to be bringing his trademark scale and intensity to Homer’s world. The trailer offers glimpses of war, sea voyages, mythical danger and the emotional weight of a man trying to return home after years of conflict and wandering.

That idea alone— nostos, the longing for return— is one of the most deeply Greek themes imaginable.

The cast is massive. Alongside Damon, the film features Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son; Anne Hathaway as Penelope, his wife; and Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of the suitors who descends upon Odysseus’ palace during his long absence. The ensemble also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth and others.

Parts of the film were shot in Greece, including locations in the Peloponnese including Messinia, Pylos, Methoni Castle, Voidokilia Beach, Nestor’s Cave and Acrocorinth— landscapes where myth, history and geography still seem to speak to one another.

The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus’ ten-year struggle to return to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. Along the way, he faces monsters, gods, temptation, shipwreck, loss and the constant pull between glory and home. But beneath the adventure is something more intimate and enduring: the story of a man trying to find his way back to the people and place that define him.

That may be why Homer’s epic has never really left us.

Every generation finds its own Odyssey. Immigrants understand it. Exiles understand it. Sailors, soldiers, refugees, travelers and anyone who has ever left home and wondered whether they would truly return understands it.

For Greeks, the story belongs not only to literature but to identity. It is one of the great gifts Greece has given the world— a story about courage, cunning, endurance, longing and the complicated meaning of home.

Now, with Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, Homer’s ancient epic is preparing for a very modern return.

The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.
