A new observatory called weseayou has been launched to monitor Greece’s progress in meeting its national and international commitments regarding the protection of its marine environment. Weseayou is a joint initiative of WWF Greece, Greenpeace and VouliWatch, with the support of the environmental organisations Blue Marine Foundation, Cyclades Preservation Fund, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the Hellenic Ornithological Society, iSea, MEDASSET, Thalassa Foundation/Aenaos Thalassa.
Accessible at weseayou.gr, the observatory gives information on the status of commitments announced by the Greek Government during the 9th “Our Ocean Conference,” as well as with Greece’s compliance with key EU laws concerning Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as EU’s “30×30” goal. The latter calls on governments to “ensure and enable” that, by 2030, “at least 30 per cent of terrestrial, inland water, and of coastal and marine areas, especially areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, are effectively conserved and managed through ecologically representative, well-connected and equitably governed systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures.”

In its first April report, weseayou shows that many of Greece’s environmental pledges regarding the marine environment remain largely unfulfilled, with several commitments and obligations either delayed or pending altogether.
