With names like David Guetta, Tiesto and Carl Cox– usually always male– dominating the electronic dance music scene… a Greek Australian girl just made history, taking home the influential Icon Award at the Electronic Dance Music Awards (EDMAs) in Miami.
Vassy is the first woman to take home the coveted award, which is comparable to an Oscar in her industry.
“I came to this country from a small town in Australia called Darwin, from a humble, hard-working Greek family with a dream to pursue my passion,” VASSY said in an interview with an industry website.
“I worked hard with integrity—it was not easy as it is a DJ-driven boys club genre, but I stayed true to myself and the dance community at radio really embraced me and gave me the platform to be myself and share my art with the world. I’m beyond grateful and proud to say that being authentically myself through out my career payed off. Ladies, women can too be icons in dance.”
The award comes after years of hard work… years of plugging away and staying true to her craft and years of collaborations with some of the industry’s biggest DJ/producers, including Tiësto, Afrojack and David Guetta.
Vassy is best known amongst hundreds of thousands of electronic music fans for her giant hit “Bad,” a collaboration with Guetta and Showtek. The track recently cracked two billion streams on various music platforms, including over 1 billion views on YouTube, alone.
