Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment has released a video showing its plans for a casino complex to be built at the site of Hellenikon International Airport, which has been inactive for 18 years.
The overall Hellenikon project includes a $9 billion investment and includes additional property enhancements, such as construction of a convention center, marina, dining areas and sports center.
If the company receives the winning bid against Hard Rock International to construct the complex at the closed airport outside of Athens, it promises to build two skyscrapers that will house a gaming area and luxury hotel.
The complex, named Inspire Athens, would feature at least 1,200 slot machines and 120 table games in its gaming area and — according to Mohegan Gaming CEO Mario Kontomerkos — create 7,000 jobs.
Inspire Athens would join Mohegan’s current list of seven properties, including its namesake Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
Kontomerkos has reportedly visited Greece several times this year to push his company’s effort.
“We are ready to begin as soon as we receive all the necessary approvals,” he said in an interview with Reuters. “We want to start as fast as possible.”
Kontomerkos said his company has been working on the project for more than two years, and it has already done land planning and covered architectural issues associated with the project.
The Greek Gaming Commission is expected to announce the winner in November. Timelines for the project remain uncertain but Mohegan estimates approximately two to three years.
