More than 2,000 officers in the Greek Police have tested positive for COVID-19, including 825 police officers in the Attica region.
Greek Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos told citizens that the sharp increase in infections among officers would not have any impact on the force carrying out its duties.
“There is absolutely no issue in the operational capacity of the Hellenic Police, and especially the services that concern the safety of citizens,” Theodorikakos told Greek media on Wednesday. “Indicatively, I want to report that the number of policemen currently hospitalized are 20 from a total force of 56,500.”
The statement comes after reports by Greek newspaper Kathimerini that police departments are being strained by officers being off duty due to the coronavirus.
On Tuesday, Greece recorded a new single-day record with 50,126 infections as the country continues its struggle contain the spread of the Omicron variant.
