United States President Donald Trump sent a letter of congratulations to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, praising him on his efforts on the ratification of the Prespes Agreement with North Macedonia.
“The deal is an achievement of historical significance for the Balkans and also proof of the courage of Tsipras’ leadership,” Trump said in his letter.
Trump added that Greece has proven to be “a pillar of stability in a complex region” and expressed the hope that the deal will inspire other countries in the region to resolve their bilateral issues.
The American President reiterated that Greece is an important ally and partner of the United States and that it looks forward to continuing cooperation to ensure peace and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans.
Although a copy of the letter has not been made public, both The White House and the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the letter to The Pappas Post.
The letter follows a long string cross-Atlantic praise showered on Tsipras by officials of the U.S. Administration, including from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and several members of Congress.
The news was first made public by the Athens Macedonian News Agency.
