The United States Embassy in Athens issued a Natural Disaster Alert, advising all U.S. citizens on four Greek islands on steps to take during ongoing seismic activity.
The memo I directed to U.S. citizens living or traveling in the vicinity of Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios Islands.
“The U.S. Mission in Greece alerts U.S. citizens to a continuing series of earthquakes near the Greek islands of Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios, including a reported magnitude 5.2 earthquake. The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection declared a state of emergency on the island of Santorini until March 3, 2025,” the statement read.
Due to the seismic activity, the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued advice for Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios, including not to attend large indoor gatherings and to avoid old or abandoned buildings.
Additionally, the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection advises people to avoid the ports of Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and Old Port (Paleos Limenas) in the area of Fira, and to choose safe routes when travelling, particularly in areas where the landslide risk is high. In case of a strong earthquake, people should immediately depart coastal areas due to the risk of a tsunami.
U.S. citizens living in or traveling near any of the affected areas should follow instructions from local authorities and closely monitor the local media and emergency alerts.
The alert also included links to Greek government websites that contain information for local residents.
