A reporter from WTAE TV in Pittsburgh named Jackie Cain shared a photo on her Facebook all the way from Souda Bay on the island of Crete.
The caption was “STEELERS PRIDE” and features U.S. Navy personnel on the USS Pittsburgh holding up 100 Terrible Towels, the unofficial symbol of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team.
Souda Bay on the island of Crete is one of the most strategic ports in the world for the United States Navy and home to a permanent base where ships, submarines and aircraft carriers of all shapes and sizes make regular port calls.
During numerous U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, the port was used regularly for refueling operations for dozens of vessels coming in and out of the port weekly.
The nearby airport on Hania’s Akritiri peninsula also serves U.S. military interests.
Souda Bay is a stopover point for Atlantic Ocean based vessels to and from the Middle East.
