Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded with Greece’s leadership for immediate support during an address to the Greek parliament on Thursday.

Tailoring his message to the audience, Zelenskyy asked Greece to use its influence in the European Union to help save what he called “our shared heritage” in the city of Mariupol, where Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has already pledged humanitarian aid.

Zelenskyy said the Russian military had bombed hospitals, theaters and houses in Mariupol, where thousands of people remain trapped.

“The suffering in both the Greek and Ukrainian communities is great from the barbarity against the civilian population,” he said via teleconference.

The Ukrainian president thanked Greece for imposing sanctions on Russia, but said the EU needs to do more, and called on the member states to reject Russian oil and completely block Russian banks from the international finance system.

Zelenskyy also asked for more weapons to defend his country against the Russian invasion.
