An Island of 44 Residents Celebrates Oxi Day Holiday with Two Student Parade

Parades and celebrations are taking place all over Greece today in commemoration of the historic day Greek prime minister Ioannis Metaxas said “no” to the Italian ultimatum to surrender to the Axis on October 28, 1940.

On the tiny island of Arkious, near Kalmynos, the island’s 44 permanent residents also celebrated and held their own parade. The island’s only two elementary school students, and their teacher Tassos Ziaskas took part in the frontier island’s annual commemoration.
